This year on the same day six years ago my father died at 2pm right after saying goodbye to his radio audience. He hadn’t been sick, but it seems that heart problems on his side are hereditary. When I heard the news it was as if I was getting that call all over again. I pray that the Lord will grant your family the strength to go on as He has done for mine. Psalm 27 is the verse that keeps us going and know that as the days go by the pain gets less, but the void left will always be there. Remember that even if God doesn’t physically speak to you, He knows what pain you are going through and He will give you the strength to go on. We will keep you in our prayers and sometimes when you just want to feel near her again, do like I do, listen to some recordings of her, watch some videos and never let anyone tell you how long you should grieve.

Sonya had the most pleasant voice to listen to over the radio. Her messages were annointed and came across the airwaves with true sincerity. And not to mention that Joyful trademark Laugh that just made everyone gitty!!!!
Sonya will truly be missed.

I am so sorry to hear this news. My mom passed on 3/13/09 and I am still very heavy but I know that Christ is my redeemer. He knows what we are going through and He makes no mistakes. Through Him we will eventually see our loved ones again. I know that Sonya and my Mom are both enjoying the heavenly choir as they praise the Lord all day long! We trust and believe in Jesus and know that His will has been and will be done. May you find peace and joy in the wonderful memories of her and remember the numerous lives she touched and changed through her radio ministry.

OMG!!! I’m stunned…… Can you please just tell us what causesd her death??!! I’m a Christian and I understand when God says it’s time — it’s time! Just kinda hard to leave it at that from a physical aspect. I really enjoyed her ministry and voice — such “cool” people. My condolences to people everywhere touched by Ms. Hamm.

Mrs. Hamm was my substitute teacher at Hillside High School in 1993(my 9th grade year). Normally, with substitute teachers you don’t really connect with them however she was such a loving and caring teacher. She really took to me and I appreciated all of the love that she showed me.
Because of the connection that we had, I expressed to her that my Mom was looking for a home. At that time, Mrs. Hamm was also in the Real Estate business. It was at this time that she actually set up time to take my Mom out to look for homes. Due to her diligence to her profession, my family was blessed with our first home.
It deeply saddens my heart to hear of the passing of this wonderful woman.
May God Continue to Bless this family!!

I am saddened of your loss, I spent time with Sonya as her Hairstylist for about two years. When Sonya first came to Total Image Unisex Salon she was very humble, I never knew who she was until she wrote the check out and I connected the two. Sonya was a very inspirational person and said to me often `Tasha` we gotta find you a husband! To make a long story short she will be greatly missed and touched a lot of lives. Sonya I know you are smiling down from heaven!! My condolences to Ms. Brown, Gary and the family!
Sincerely,

My heart is very heavy. I have really enjoyed Sonya Hamm and her Breakfast morning club show on the radio. I use to listen to her when I lived in the Raleigh, NC area when she was on The Light 103.9 and then I moved to Atlanta from Kansas City and was excited to find that she was on Praise 97.5. I had the opportunity of meeting her in Atlanta at several promotional events. My thoughts and my prayers go out to her family. She will dearly be missed.

In the book of James 4, the word of the Lord says, “What is your life. It is but a vapour that appears for a little while and then vanishes away.” Oh how it blesses me, that I was able to work with Sonya, during her “…little while.” She was a true joy to both know and work with. I too was blessed by how my dear brother Gary covered her, every step of the way.
I will close with the words of this song;
SO LONG MY SISTER - SO LONG - BUT NOT GOODBYE - BECAUSE WE’LL
MEET AGAIN IN THAT SWEET BYE AND BYE - SO YOU JUST GO ON NOW
GO ON AND TAKE YOUR REST - BECAUSE ONE DAY WE WILL MEET - WE ALL WILL MEET AGAIN!
AMEN!

My Precious Friend, Sonya!!! My love to Gary and Momma Brown. She has made her journey to her heavenly home and heaven is rejoicing with her lovely presence, her humble heart, and her beautiful, angelic voice. Together we served the Lord through the radio ministry of WDUR-1490AM. We met weekly as announcers for prayer and intercession. She was a true friend, a real person, a faithful wife,a giving daughter, and a special lady. We loved each other and should have seen each other more often. Sonya, I will miss you here on earth AND we will see each other on the Great Getting Up Morning- Fare Ye Well!

To the Hamm Family,
My heart is heavy during your time of bereavement. I started listened to 103.9 The Light with Sonya many years ago. I can remember all the mornings she brought me home safely after working night-shift at the hospital. I would struggle to stay awake but it was something about Sonya’s voice that gave me that extra boost of energy to make it home. I know that Sonya loved the Lord and we can rejoice in her homegoing. Be strong in the Lord and the power of His might.
Love Sincerely,
Nicole

What a blessing Sonya Hamm has been to the Body of Christ and the radio listeners worldwide. Sonya was the REAL DEAL! Her spirit was pure and you felt that over the airwaves. There are many announcers who play music and show the audience a good time; but Sonya was SO different! Everyone listening could sense that this woman knew the Lord! There was NOTHING like riding in the morning listening to Sonya minister through the Breakfast Club! She was truly sensational! God bless her dear family and be comforted that she did the Work of the Lord with her life.

My sincerest prayers are with the family in this hour. I never met Sonya face-to-face,BUT,we definitely met in spirit. Sonya’s voice was anointed with the oil of gladness and love that healed many wounded hearts over the airwaves. I bless God for her leaving here and joining her heavenly father at the table of eternal life. To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.

But in the midst of this I know she could never be in a better place than where she is now. To God be the glory!

Because our computer equipment prevents us from listening to the radio at work, I didn’t hear this until I was leaving work today and I very nearly ran off the road! I enjoyed listening to Sonya when she was at The Light 103.9 and was even more delighted when I went to a women’s business breakfast meeting she was conducting, had a lengthy conversation we discovered that we were cousins. (Creedmoor is such a small place!)
From that point on I made a point of keeping up with her even when she moved to Atlanta. The last time I was her was when she MC’d for John Gray’s play a few years ago but she was the same grinning, vibrant Sonya. She was such and inspiration and I admired her because she lived her dream.
My prayers go out to everyone whose life she touched especially, her mother, husband, sons and close friends. Although we know she’s in a better place it doesn’t make the reality of her departure any easier. God will sustain you. God bless, Sharon.

To Brother Gary and the family,
On behalf of Apostle John A. Bennett, Lady Alice Bennett and the Church of the Apostolic Revival International family, we mourn with you in your lost. I was a friend of Sonya’s starting when she worked 103.9fm. Sonya was the radio announcer that gave me a chance to show abilities God gave me musically and she allowed my theme to play for her for 3 months in 1998 opening her breakfast club broadcast; and she also allowed me the time to be a voice impressionist in the mornings by phone. Sonya was a go getter and spontaneous creator who was always open for ideas, but yet followed protocol to see if it was ok. When Sonya went to Atlanta, she never forgot her friends. I would call her and she always made time to talk. Thank God for Sonya Hamm. I pray that God comfort you, give you a peace that pass all understanding ,and strengthen you in this time.

I enjoyed Mrs. Hamm in the mornings when she was on Praise 97.5FM. She was inspirational and surely encouraged my spirit. I was shocked when my wife told me this evening and it felt like a member of the family had passed.
Not long ago, I learned of her web broadcast. And surely as when she was on 97.5, Mrs. Hamm retained that encouraging spirit, enjoying Jesus Christ.
May God comfort and kept those she leaves behind. May we all look to have such a commitment to Christ as she displayed. We grieve with you family. In Jesus Name, Amen.

I “met” Sonya Hamm back in 2001. A friend was listening to her morning show on 103.9 The Lite of Raleigh,NC. I listened for awhile and was moved by her ability to make listeners care and be filled with God’s love and kindness. I started listening to her on my own time from that day forward. I thanked God every morning for allowing me to have just one more day and then I was off to listen to Sonya and receive my daily message and inspiration from God through Mrs. Hamm. I thanked God for her because it was the closest I got to church in a looong time. I was hurt when she chose to move to Atlanta but she did what was best for her-another promotion in God’s work. I truly owe it to her for laying the foundation for my journey back to Christ. I prayed God would one day let me meet her in person-to thank her for renewing my belief and my soul. I remain an avid listener of The Lite and was heartbroken to hear of her passing. God tells me she is surely in a greater place- but still-my heart goes out to her family and friends. She was truly an angel here on earth and I know shes an angel there in heaven. Thank all of you and God..for sharing her with all of us. I read a saying recently, “Make your footsteps worth following.” I can bet her shoes will be hard to fill. My heartfelt sympathies and prayers are with you. God Bless.

What a shock this morning to hear of Sonya Hamm’s passing!!! My husband and I were introduced to Ms. Hamm by Callie Douglas when she was on the 103.9 in Raleigh, NC. She definitely did not meet a stranger–we talked as if we had known each other forever!! Never saw or spoke to her again, but she made an impact and I’ll never forget her!!

To the Family and Friends of our dear sister in Christ,
Sonya Hamm:
The Balm Of God’s Love
When we lose someone we love
The loss seems too great to bear
God sends us friends to comfort us
To show that He deeply cares
But in the dark hours of the night
When there’s nobody else around
When we feel the saddest and loneliest
It’s there God’s love can be found
It’s like a soothing, healing balm
To soothe our broken hearts
The healing oil poured over us
That flows into every part
We can rest secure in God’s love
And know He’s by our side
He holds us when we feel as though
A part of us has died
We can know that God will listen
When we just want to talk
And when we feel we need to cry
We can share it with the Lord
For He is always waiting there
Ready with arms open wide
As we pour out the hurt within
He pours His love inside
Our Father above loves us so much
And will never leave us alone
He will not forsake us in our need
To face this on our own
He comforts us and strengthens us
And rubs us with His balm
And as the dawn breaks through the night
We’ll awake in His loving arms.

Sonya, I can’t believe I won’t hear the laughter in your voice whenever you would call my name, when we would talk after a long period of time. Even now it has been a long time since we have spoken, but I thought of you often and someone would always let me know you were doing OK on the air. I remember how everyday, sometimes all day long you always had something you had to tell me. You were so excited about being in Radio and having your first job at WSES in Raleigh, N.C. You were easy to train and I worked you guys pretty hard but it paid off. Look at the great things you have done and the many wonderful things people will remember about you. I always knew you could be all and everything you wanted to be and you did it! I’ll never forget your voice and I’ll never forget your smile. I’ll never forget how as part of a great team we were the talk of the town and took WSES to # 3 in the market as an AM station that once was # 31 in that area. You were Sonya Brown then, but oh how you loved Gary! Everybody on our team knew that was the love of your life, so it was only natural that he made you his wife. Evwrything was Gary this and Gary that! I remember how your Mom was your best friend and how you loved her so. I remember the beginning of your Spiritual journey, the talks we had and the choice you made but most of all Sonya I will remember that “memories don’t leave like people do they always stay with you.” Thank you for the memories and “Goodnight…until.”

Hello, and God Bless you all. First I have to say that being that Mrs. Hamm was a radio personality I never knew she was such a beautiful women. I remember when she was no longer the morning host and how disappointed I was, even to to the point of saying”Yolanda Adams does not know anything about us Atlantans”. No disrespect, but Sonya was just like one of the family. I remember once calling into the show and I was surprised (pleasantly) at how long she talked with me. We were talking about what I call my husbands addiction to Television. She gave me some advice and said “Hang in there girl” and I really enjoyed speaking with her.It was as though I was speaking to one of my best girl friends. I did not know where she had gone, but I know I truly missed that personable touch she had. We were shocked at the passing of our Sister and Friend Sonya Hamm. She was always morning after morning, blessing thousands over the air waves in Raleigh NC with 103.9 The Light Morning Breakfast Club. I can say that Sonya just beat us running the race to the finish line!! I’m reminded of scripture…”To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord!!” So Sonya we want say goodbye, but Farewell until we meet again!!on behalf of Shabach Full Gospel Church Family; Zebulon NC

Wow… I am in tears as i write this message. I came to Atlanta in 2005 and joined the Radio One family. Sonya was the 1st person to give me a chanve and gave me the opportunity of a lifetime. I wa the 1st intern to be sent on an all expense paid trip tp Orlando at Sonya’s erquest to produce her show for 3 days in Orlando. Sonya and Gary became like family to me. If it was not for Sonya being obedient to God I would not be where I am today. Truely I believe that it is because of Sonya that I am part of the person I am in this industry today. They used to say she went through interns and producers like water…lol nah… it’s just that Sonya needed someone to be her help. I learned Sonya to the point where I would know what she was going to say and do before she did it. She called me her “lil kiki” I cant stop crying amd I know Gary is going to miss her so much.. They had a love story truely a God story. Every morning her would come in to work with her. They were so affectionate. It was like everyday was the first day with them. They did everything together. Gary I thank you for allowing me to see a wonderful man that loves his wife each and every day. I was looking forward to sharing my success with Sonya. THe last time we spoke she said she said she was proud of me. I guess that will have to do….. I miss her… and im praying for peace to be with you Gary and Mom youi hang in there with your beautiful self may the peace of God stay with you day and night. Lakisha “9″ Thomas…Radio One Detroit

God’s peace and comfort to her family, church members, friends, co-workers and loyal listeners. We were all touched by an angel.
She always closed her segments with these words:
Too blessed to be stressed
Too anointed to be disappointed
Too equipped to be whipped
Thank you Lord! Sonya Hamm will never be forgotten.

It is truly sad to hear of the passing of such a wonderful woman. I saw Sonya once in Raleigh and she had the most unique personality. She treated everyone the same and she did not make a difference in anyone. I pray that God will comfort the family and that the love that Sonya had for people will pour out and comfort her family during this difficult time. May God rest upon your hearts like the dew in the morning.

My deepest sympathy goes out to the Hamm family in the loss of Sonya. Sonya was an inspiration to her radio audience and she touched the lives of many. She was truly an anointed woman of God and I believe that she is now safe in the arms of our Lord and Saviour. Her ministry gave many of us hope and peace especially on days when you would wake up with nothing going right or just feeling down and out. She would always say something that would uplift your spirits and give you peace of mind.
May God bless and comfort you during this time of sorrow and know that Sonya is safe in His loving arms. She may be absent from the body but know that she is present with the Lord.
Kimberly Davis on Fri, 27th Mar 2009 9:38 am
I am deeply saddened but know to be absence from the body is to be present with the Lord. I remember speaking with Sonya when I was very depressed after a layoff. She was very busy on the radio station but it overflowed me with joy that she prayed with me during commercials for better employment. I was so touched by her spirits and willingness to be the person God called her to be. My prayers go to the family and friends of Ms. Hamm and know she is a special angel in heaven!

Gossamer’s Wings
Carried on the wings of love
You were swept away
To that glorious land
Where we’ll see you again one day.
With the angels hovering near
You said your last good-bye
You gave up your battle
And soared into the sky.
That sweet smile
We will always carry in our hearts
Knowing you were ready
When from our lives you did depart.
Gossamer’s wings I imagine
You now call your own
As you sail in the Heavens
And sit in front of the Throne.
No memory could ever endow
The true beauty of your soul
For God gave to us our own Angel
For a brief while to hold.

Sonya was such a real and Godly inspiration. I find myself asking why? There was such a great move on the horizon for her but God knows all things. I would like to express to the family I will miss her even though I only met her via the chat room at 97.5. I was so excited to reconnect when I got wind of her having her own sight and I was shocked, she remembered me even though I’m thousand of miles away, and with Sister Sonya “where the spirit is”, and it was certainly with Sister Sonya and she certainly touched me with her words of compassion, uplifting, encouragement and always a testimony to God’s goodness in her life. My prayers are with you for the coming days, months and years as family, friends and saints remember such a gift God gave us over the air.

I am saddened to hear of Sonya’s homegoing. I was sad when she decided to move to Atlanta and wouldn’t be part of the Breakfast Club anymore. I was driving to a doctors appt yesterday when I learned of her passing and just couldn’t believe it. My thoughts and prayers goes out to her family.

It was truly a shock to hear of the passing of Sonya. I was a listener when she worked at The Light 103.9 in Raleigh. Sonya’s voice, inspirational messages and her sweet, sweet spirit will always stand out. I pray for strength for her Husband, Mother and other family and friends. Just know that God has chosen another Angel to be a part of His everlasting ministry.

I did not know this lady, but just listening to her on the air, one could easily feel how she was truly a child of God. Her death has truly touch my heart and I feel like she was a part of my life. There is a hurting inside of me like losing a a member of my family and I had never met her. May the Holy Spirit comfort you in your time of loss. Just remember, that whatever God ordains is right. His will is always justified. Sonya is in a much better place now. May God continue to bless her family and keep you all in His care.

I was deeply sadden to hear of the passing of one of Raleigh NC/Alanta,Ga sister in Christ. Sonya was anchored in the Lord. To her family and friends, Be strong, we know we will see her again when we have finished our journey here on this temporay place we call home, and cross over that river jordan. Death had no place in Sonya life, and surly no string, because Jesus has already fought that fight and won that for us. Tears will fall, and a twinge in your heart, but God has promised us all “He would never leave us or forsake us”.

To the Family of a wonderful woman…It was my pleasure to have worked with Sonya in the early days in Raleigh. What a blooming talent she was then and what a mark she made on the industry. The last time we spoke she was the same beautiful young lady that I remembered and we shared some memories about Sweet Bob, CD and others who are laughing and praying now with her in heaven. She always asked about my daughter, Jennifer, who was just a tot when we were working together. She used to sneak her candy when I wasn’t looking. All such good memories to have and cherish. Rest my friend in the arms of our Father! See you later. Brenda & Jennifer

To Brother Hamm:
I was shocked to hear of Sonya’s death, I know with God you are spiritually strong, but I will continue to pray for you that physical strength is given. You & Sonya were more than husband & wife and losing someone that was more to you than just a wife is a tremendous loss. I will miss her dearly, I disliked the fact she took on the Radio One in Atlanta, but I know when God opens the door for opportunity, you have to walk through it. I don’t know if you remember me, but I was Sis. Bonnie Mae Beulah on The Light with Melissa Wade. I played as an old lady during the morning hours on The Light. Well, again may God keep you and fill that void and may the rest of your days be blessed. You will be in my prayers from this day forward. Try to stay encouraged and always knowing that God never makes a mistake. We may not understand God’s will for our lives or our loved ones, but He understands and knows what’s best for us when we can’t see what’s best for us. No one will ever feel that losing a loved one is the best thing for us, but God is all knowing. So trust in the Lord my brother and lean not to your own understanding, but in all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your path.
Love, Peace and Happiness…Valerie Flagg

It is with a real sense of sadness that I extend my deepest condolences to the Hamm Family! Sonya was a good friend to one of my best friends, who asked us to raise she and Gary up in prayer-so to receive the email telling of the loss hits really close to home.
Just know that although her voice is silenced here, she is using it to welcome in the Saints to heaven. May God continue to take precedence in ALL things!
Peace and blessings during this time and beyond,

I remember meeting Mrs. Hamm. She was so sweet and friendly. I sang happy birthday twice on the breakfast club when it was praise 97.5. I used to call the station everymorning and she would answer “Hello Shakerri” like she could see in the future that I was calling. She went to my church and my mom and I would always listen to the station in the morning. Sadly I began listenig to hot 107.9 or 95.5. On 3-27-09 I came home and my mom showed me a picture of a woman and asked me who I thought it was. I couldn’t figure it out for my life. She told it was Mrs. Hamm and that she had died. I felt sadness for the rest of the day but a wore a smile on my face because I knew she was the lucky one who got to meet Jesus. I love her and I know she is watching me everday!!!

I was really saddened to hear of Sonya’s homegoing this a.m. as I was driving to work. I always loved to hear her in the early morning hours when she was broadcasting 6-10 a.m. She started my day off right. I could not listen when she started broadcasting form 10-3 very much. I loved to hear her voice, somehow all was right with the world when I did, no matter what was going on in my life at that time.
I know she and Connie Flynt are rejoicing together in Heaven with Jesus as soon as she closed her eyes on this side, and with all the other giants who are residing with Jesus now. I can see Connie (”Happy Feet”) dancing all over Heaven now because she has her dear friend with her to rejoice. I am grateful that the Lord allowed her to cross our paths; we are the richer for having her.
So to the family I say, I know your hearts are so heavy right now and you think you won’t make it another hour, but look up your Redeemer has His Arms wrapped tightly around you to comfort you. He’s saying He’s sorry for taking her now but it was her time to be reunited with Him. He’s saying also that He will take care of her until all of you are reunited with her in Heaven, Be strong until I call you home.
May the Lord God bless all of you at this time of mourning. My prayers are with you all.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the family, friends, and loved ones of Mrs. Sonya Hamm! I was shocked (as was the entire city) when I heard the news about her passing. I almost had to pull the car to the side of the road to compose myself. Although I had never met Sonya, she felt like a friend or family to me. When I became saved seven years ago, she soon became a part of my everyday routine through the radio (it was like hearing from my friend everyday). She will be dearly missed, but at least she is resting with the Lord and is no longer suffering. Be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. God bless you, Mr. Hamm!

Sonya Hamm’s voice was one of the first voices I heard on the radio shortly after moving to Durham 17 years ago, her bubbly personality came through loud and clear and you could sense the Christ in her, I was also blest to meet Sonja in person on 2 different occassions while volunteering in Durham.and of course she confirmed the fact that she was a true beautiful woman of God but also a very friendly Lady. I of course was one of the people greatly dissapointed by her move to Atlanta, but as a Pastor I know that we must go where we’re sent by God. Thank God we heard from her periodically while she was in Atlanta. I say to her family know that God is still with you and though we don;t unerstand his ways we know that He makes no mistakes. I repeat what someone else said relive the good times and she’ll never be gone. Go be with you. .

Sonya’s life was well lived, for unto Christ she continued to give.
She didn’t seek riches or worldly fame, but daily continued to lift up His name.
With every breath and action she took, to her Lord and savior she always looked.
To you she was a wife, a daughter, a friend, but to God she was faithful to the very end.

To the family.
I am not sure what happen to Sonya but I lost my mom right before Christmas and she too was very young. I miss her so very much and I still find myself having to pull my car over when I think about her. My mom had MS and her body was hurting very badly, so I believe she decided to ask God to bring her home and take her away from her pain. At her homegoing Pastor Dollar said she is where we all should want to be. When I step out of my selfish reasons I am happy to know she is ok. I share my story to only say God knows better than we do and why things happen the way they do. I miss my mom as I am sure you will miss Mrs. Hamm, but know that God has her now and know that you will see her again.

To Gary and the family of Sonya:
I would like to extend my deepest sympathy to you at this time. When I heard of the passing of my dear sister in Christ, I was saddened for a moment, but I also found comfort for several reasons. 1. She loved and knew the Lord. 2. I do believe she was fulfilling her purpose and reaching and loving on others and pointing them to the Lord. 3. She is in heaven where she is rejoicing all of the time.
You all are in my thoughts and prayers at this time and if you need anything, please let me know.
I had known Sonya for quite some time as we attended Christian Faith Center together for years and we were both under the leadership of the late Bishop Mack Timberlake, Jr. She also was a guest at one of my New Year’s breakfasts several years ago. What a blessing it was listening to her radio show on the Light (103.9) and she was truly missed when she went to Atlanta. She will be missed here but she will certainly live on in our memories.

I was up late watching a program on TBN about a father who loss his son in a tragic farming accident. The father said that his sons’ life was not in vain and that out of his passing God had been faithful and had blossmed his ministry. And this is the scripture he refered to:John 12:24 (NIV)24I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds.
So with all this said, I just wanted to say Ms. Hamm’s life was not in vain. She has reached many lives. And though I did not know her personally; God allow her to touch my life through her good works at praise 97.5. While many was going through, her daily encouragement was a blessing and her home going will only draw more hearts to Jesus as we reflect how important it is that we too are to be doing His good works while Gods’ time permits. May God comfort you in your season of loss.

Since, I left the radio station I have ontained my Master of Social Work (MSW). I will always cherish our moments. I will always love her…may God bless her family.

Giving thanks unto our LORD and SAVIOR. He gave us a voice sent directly from the heavens above here on earth and I thank him for Sister Sonya Hamm. She has been truly a blessing to me in more ways than one. Although, I have never met her personally she has always ministered to me through the radio station. So, we know thus said the LORD! to be absent from the body is to present with the LORD. I for one am very pleased to have an Angle that GOD sent to earth for a short time is now in Heaven watching over me. I thank GOD for you Sister Hamm and my prayers will be with your family at this time.

I’m saddened to hear of Sonya’s death. I met her years ago when she was a student in a writing class I taught, and I followed her career in the Raleigh/Durham area until she moved away to Atlanta.
She was a tremendous person, with a heartfelt love for people, and used the radio to express her love.
To her husband and other family members: “May God bless you and keep you and wrap each of you in the comforting embrace of His love.

Sonya was one of the most powerful female voices in radio during her time. Her smile could be heard over the airwaves throughout the country. It was great to work with her at The Light and FOXY in Raleigh and WDUR in Durham. We ofen talked about putting up a tent so we could evangelize for the Lord in the Triangle area. Gary, I’m sure you recall those light=hearted conversations, right now our prayers are with you and the family. She will be greatly missed.

To the family and friends of our beloved sister in Christ:
Although our sister is no longer here on Earth, she still lives on in our hearts. It’s time to celebrate and rejoice, because she is now with our Heavenly Father. The angels sang a special praise when she entered the Gates of Heaven. No more sickness, no more pain, only glorious euphoric bliss! What a true blessing to be welcomed in His omnipotent arms!!
You will go out in joy
and be led forth in peace;
the mountains and hills
will burst into song before you,
and all the trees of the field
will clap their hands.

Most remember Sonya from the radio stations she worked but I remember her laughter at the reservation center here in Raleigh. She would get tickled at the customers and burst in laughter with tears. On those hard days, that memory alone will brighten up my day. That’s how I will forever remember her. Sonya was truly an angel on earth and God knew we needed someone of her strength in heaven looking over us in this day and time. So though tears may fall from time to time focus on the laughter and beautiful smile. God bless !

I wanted to express such a great loss, Sonya what I great and really nice person!! I had the pleasure of meeting her back in 11/08. Actually if it wasn’t for Sonya, I wouldn’t have received a blessing of a new 07 Kia Rondo. That weekend I heard so was going to be at Kia Conyers, so I went. There I met Sonya and her husband. She was very nice to me and my kids. After some small talk, I started to tell her my negative experenice I had with Kia Conyers just some months before. The first thing said to me was wait a minute!! Sonya went Greg Moore office told him the story. He came took my info again and promised me he would help. After that Sat. I received a phone call from Kia Conyers on just that Tues. advsing that I had a choice between two cars. Needless to say, she was/is my blessing. My heart goes out to her entire family in this time of need… God Bless!!!

Gary,
Take great comfort in the work that you and Sonya have done. With you as her partner, Sonya’s life and ministry gave voice to every note that God put in her to encourage and strengthen others. To say that she was loved by many is a true but totally inadequate statement. We can truly say that she not only touched people, but she touched lives.
Wherever Sonya went she had her Power Team at her side. She had Mom who guided, encouraged and comforted with a love that only a mother can give. And she had you to support, console, and cheer her on. But equally as important as those things, you were a safe, peaceful harbor where she could daily return after navigating the rough seas and rocky bays of those souls she was reaching out to with her message.
In this forum, many are expressing well-deserved love and appreciation to Sonya and for her impact on them. But of this I am absolutely confident. Every day you gave Sonya her ‘roses’ when she could appreciate them. She knew that she was loved and appreciated and that gave her the strength to share that love with her audiences. That should give you great comfort and solace.
Be encouraged, my brother. We love you.

I enjoyed her words of encouragement and her sharing of God’s word. I felt a special connection to her and felt as though I personally knew her. She has gone to a much better place that when I am no longer here I hope to be as well.
Brigit Carter on Mon, 30th Mar 2009 4:37 pm
Let me first say how saddened I am to hear of the loss of your dear loved one. There are no words at this time except to know that Sonya was loved by so many just like myself who never met her but only heard her voice. When I moved to Durham she was who I praised God with first thing in the morning. Later when she moved to Atlanta, whenver I was home I always made a point to tune in just to hear her. She was an inspiration, a true gift from God to motivate and lead so many people to praise God. Loss is a strange thing. While you know she is with the Lord there is unbelieveable grief and sadness, anger at God even. But this will pass with time, lots of time. So stay stong and know that you will go through but if you trust in God you will come out on the other side of remembering nothing but good and not the pain she may have endured during her illness. God bless and know you are being lifted up. Seek help should you need to, we are human.

My deepest sympathy and prayers go out to the Hamm Family. Sonya was my favorite radio dj when I moved from Atlanta to Durham in 2002. She inspired me so many mornings on the Breakfast Club and even gave me my first radio debut to sing the Birthday Song live one morning. When I moved back to Atlanta in 2003…I couldn’t find another dj quite as warm and touching. Sonya could reach through the radio and talk to you, embrace you, and seemingly understand exactly where you were. When she came to Atlanta in 2004, I was ECSTATIC! I listened faithfully at work and in the car. She will truly be missed. She is having the time of her existence in Heaven dj’ing a Holy Ghost party! Thank you Lord for her life, ministry, and legacy!

I’ve recently moved to Washington, DC after having lived and worked in the Atlanta, GA area the past 4 years and was shocked to hear the news only this morning (4/7) about Sonya. I remember when moving to Atlanta in 2004, I really kind of felt lost. At that time she was on I think it was 6-10 and God used her very special, sweet and humbling voice to bless me while riding to work. I remember also not listening to the radio station for a while (my own personal protest) because they were moving her from that time frame (not that I had anything against Yolanda), but Sonya just had a way of knowing where you were, you know? At any rate, I want you to know I mourn with you but also rejoice in knowing, she’s moved on now from faith to sight! Thank you for sharing her with us.

I will miss her statement, “Tell her Sonya Hamm sent ya! She was a blessing to us all. Remembering her will keep her memory ALIVE! God’s love to the family.

We pray that God will continue to heal your broken hearts. We understand the loss of a loved one. We would like for you to know that we have always been blessed by her presence on the radio. She was very special. May God continue to keep you until Jesus appears to take us home, those who love and trust in him. We love you and we thank you for sharing her with us and all who listened to the program.

Our hearts will never forget the words of inspiration our Sis. Sonya Hamm spoke to the ladies of Hunter Hill First Baptist church at our Womens Conference. The Breakfast Club was only the beginning of a mission from God to The City of Atlanta. Sonya your mission was not in vain and became full circle. Sonya I will never forget the telephone calls and the blessings you always gave me from the first day we met . Until we meet again, I can hear you saying “Wait God I have an ideal” Gary we love you and know you are a Man after God’s own heart. We will miss her terribly. Love & Blessings to the Family.

Momma Brown and Gary,
My heart is still so heavy. I keep a pic of Sonya among my family photos, because that is where it belongs. I even still have her old business card from Coldwell Banker while in Durham. I still have the book she gave me that I laughed and asked to autograph, I told her she my favorite celebrity.Gary and Sonya, you will always be my covenant Pastors.
Momma, don’t lose your smile, your laughter. I know it is incredibly tough right now, but anyone who looks at you sees Sonya, you are identical twins. They see her smile when they see you smile, they hear her laughter when you laugh, you even walk alike. It is tough for us all, but remember everything that Sonya was and still is….she got from momma Brown.
Sonya was always nice but firm,Momma she got that from you. She would always look you straight in the eyes when she talked. she could look into your soul and tell if you were hurting. Sonya and Gary always had a presence about them, two or the sweetest people I have ever known. Momma, they got that from you.
GARY,YOU AND SONYA have always been the same. No matter how famous Sonya became, she was always Sonya. It interesting, but I don’t think the fame ever really fazed her, she realized it wasn’t real.
I will really miss Sonya…strange, I keep hearing her calling me all the time…Greg!!!.
Momma and Gary, I love you both so very, very much.
Gregory

To the Hamm and Brown Family. My prayers and thoughts are with you all. I was so shock to hear of the passing of Sonya Hamm. She brought so much to Georgia at Praise 97.5 FM. I would wake up with her in the mornings and then when she moved to 10am I could not wait for my morning patients to leave so I could blast the radio and get my Praise on with Sonya, and then there was the Prayer Chat Room; did not God move as other believers connected together in one Spirit praying together. When she left off the radio I stop listening to 97.5 because I did not feel the same anoiting that was there while Sonya was there. She will surely be missed by so many, and I pray that God with keep you all in perfect peace. With Deepest Sympathy, Denise Gistand

I am so sorry to hear about the passing of one of my favorites radio voices. Before I moved away I Sonya made me feel like a friend even though I never met her in person. My pray is for the family. May God Bless and the Hoyt Ghost continue to comfort the family in the years to come.

I use to listen to Minister Hamm every morning on 103.9
and the sister was a real earcatching personality. She
served the Lord well I do believe and also service to
the general public that love the Lord with all their
heart, mind and soul. I am very late on sending my
condolescences to you, the Hamm family; but I am not
altogether late. Be encouraged brother Hamm, and I trust and pray that the Lord will continue to strengthen you day by day. May God be with you and yours always.

Mrs. Hamm you will be missed, and to the family stay strong, and you shall get through this one day at a time, and know that God is still good.

I can remember Sonya and her spirit, a friend of the community and a Sister in the Lord. Sonya was born on August 25, 1959, my father’s 40th birthday. There are so many similarities. My later father was a baritone and he was a Deejay in the 60’s and 70’s on WSRC and WLLE. She transitioned on what would have been my parents’ 64th wedding anniversary. My mother passed away on August 15, so I was out of the loop about Sonya. As I type this, I am listening to “Angel” by Sarah McLachlan. My prayers are with Sonya’s family. We thank you for sharing this beautiful sister with us. Because she passed our way, we are richer for the experience.
